REECE Finnerty has been named Chobham Rugby Club’s second XV players’ player of the season.

He received an overwhelming show of support in a ballot among his Cannons team-mates.

A spokesman for the Scarlet & Golds said: “Reece, who played 17 games, received nearly two-thirds of his fellow players’ vote for Cannons’ players’ player of the year, a huge testament to the respect he holds from his team-mates.

“The only other players to receive more than one vote were Sam Thirlwell, Chris Love-Baker, Henry Fisher and Harrison Jones.”

The Cannons’ coaches’ player of the season was Fisher, the skipper.

“Henry not only captained the Cannons in 2022-23, but was voted coaches’ player of the year, covered for Chris Nicholas wherever needed and was a mainstay in the backline for his 14 games,” said the spokesman.

Chris Love-Baker was the Cannons’ most-improved player of the season.

The spokesman said: “Chris stepped up, not only as a utility forward, and appeared in the backs and helped the team out wherever he was asked to play his 16 games.”

Top newcomer for the Cannons last season was Sam French.

“Sam joined the club during pre-season and played 14 games for the Cannons as well as appearing for the first XV,” said the spokesman.

“For the Cannons, Sam was a useful utility back. We have great expectations of him as a player at Chobham.”

And Tom Martin scooped the award for being Cannons’ young player of the season.

The spokesman said: “In his first season post-colts, Tom had a huge impact on the Cannons, playing half-a-dozen games, as well as making his first XV debut.

“His speed on the wing and at full-back benefited the Cannons, and a number of tries made him suitably chosen as the team’s young player of the year.”

Meanwhile, James Young was named Chobham Crusaders’ – third XV – players’ player of the year.

“James, who played in ten games for the Crusaders during the season, had more than a third of the votes for the team’s players’ player of the year award and played for the Cannons in a number of games,” said the spokesman.

“Ever present in the Crusaders, he was an obvious choice for the award.”

Tom Knox won the trophy for being Crusaders’ captain’s player of the season.

The spokesman said: “Tom not only played most of the games during the season, he has also helped out in the management and captaincy of the Crusaders.

“He was an obvious choice for captain’s player of the year.”
