FORMER Woking FC striker Elvis Hammond has been jailed for 12 months for his part in a £278,000 money-laundering operation.

Hammond, 31, and associate Victor Williams, 32, were each sentenced to a year by a judge at Oxford Crown Court earlier today.

The pair were charged with money laundering in January 2010.

An  investigation in the Ghana capital of Accra uncovered a payment of £278,532 which was transferred to the bank account of a company owned by Hammond and Williams.

Hammond - whose  previous clubs  include Leicester City and Fulham - and Williams claimed the money was from the sale of land and produced documents to back up their story.

But detectives travelled to Ghana and obtained evidence from local authorities to prove the documents were in fact false.

Both men pleaded guilty on the first day of their trial in May.
