A RUSTY but razor sharp samurai sword was among the items gathered on the latest clean-up by the Woking Litter Warriors.

A bumper squad of the litterpicking volunteers were joined by Woking MP Jonathan Lord, Canalside councillor and now Woking Mayor M Ilyas Raja and Cllrs Dale Roberts and Ellen Nicholson last bank holiday Monday.

The group spent more than two hours clearing the area around the Asda Superstore on Forsyth Road and along nearby Dartmouth Avenue, collecting a total of 21 bags of general rubbish and seven bags of recyclable items – as well as a lonely car tyre, an equally lonely broken office chair and a number of soggy teddy bears.

The sword was discovered by Cllr Nicholson, who unearthed the rusty blade hidden in a bush down Loder Close, a short distance from Broadmere Primary Academy.

“It’s just as well we found the sword rather than a small child,” said WLW founder Lauren Horncastle. “Although it was rusty and had plainly been there for some time, the blade was still incredibly sharp and could have caused a nasty cut.”

The sword was taken to Surrey Police and deposited into one of their knife bins.

Other finds included five heavy duty nitrous oxide canisters, one of which still contained some of the gas, and a used syringe, found behind a wall on Albert Drive.

Other litter warriors were also out along Chobham Road in Knaphill, where they collected a further five bags of rubbish.
