A MOTORCYCLIST plunged head on into a caravan in a near-fatal accident in Bisley on Friday afternoon.

The caravan was on the driveway of a house on the Guildford Road when police were alerted to the incident.

More than seven police cars, an ambulance, a fire engine and a chopper attended the scene at around 4.25pm.

The rider of the motorbike was a man believed to be in his 20s, who suffered potentially life-threatening head injuries and was taken to the Royal London Hospital by air ambulance.

Tailbacks went on for miles heading towards the M25 as traffic came to a virtual standstill after road closures were put in place on the A322 between Clews Lane and Wilcot Close, while police diverted the vehicles away from the scene.

Residents trying to get home on foot or by car weren’t permitted near the scene and had to find alternative routes.

The helicopter landed in the Bisley Primary School site nearby on the opposite side of the road.

One onlooker said: “I was sitting in my garden and heard all the sirens.

The motorcyclist must have been going at some speed and came over the hill at the blind spot and lost control.”

Fortunately the caravan owners weren’t at home but the woman, who did not want to be named for fear of upsetting anyone, said: “We weren’t in at the time. But we were going to be out at the front doing the hedges today.

“We haven’t even been allowed home, so we haven’t seen anything. Like everyone else, we don’t know anything yet."

The closures were still in place two-and-a-half hours later.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it is urged to contact Surrey Police on 101 quoting reference P13217784.
