THE Royal British Legion popped up outside Sainsbury’s Brookwood on Saturday in support of Armed Forces Day.

Exchanging poppies for donations, members of the Bisley, Knaphill and West End Branch of the RBL were manning their stations over the weekend, with supporters out in force.

Branch Chairman, Councillor John Kingsbury, said: “Through the generosity of local residents and visitors to the store, the sum of more than £640 was raised on the day for British Legion funds – the branch would like to thank everyone who contributed.”

Also in attendance were Branch Social Secretary and Poppy Appeal Organiser Joyce Cadwallader, and branch members Rae Sherrer and Cllr Saj Hussain.

Over in the town centre, the men and women benefitting from the supermarket appeal, including Ben Fraser (right), were resplendent in their Armed Forces uniforms.

Cadets brushed shoulders with esteemed military personnel and veterans, with the gathered masses led in prayer and song by military representatives and Woking Mayor Tony Branagan, himself an ex-serviceman.

Meanwhile, Cllr Kingsbury has taken the opportunity to launch an appeal of his own, with more manpower needed to help fuel his branch’s efforts.

He explained: “The branch are actively seeking new members. They do not need to have a military background, and anyone interested in joining should contact 07967 723999.”
