BE PREPARED is their motto, and the boys and girls of Horsell’s Scouts and Guides groups certainly were as they put on a Grand May Fayre to remember at a sunbaked Wheatsheaf Common.

Celebrating its 37th year, the 2015 incarnation of the hugely popular annual spectacular had it all, once Mayor Tony Branagan had declared the festivities open at midday: from traditional Morris and Maypole Dancing to more contemporary performances from local dance troupe, Summerscales Performing Arts.

That was all before the serious action began, with sprightly Scout and Guide packs pitting their brawn and wits against each other in an It’s a Knockout-style showdown for the honour of lifting the May Fayre Trophy at the end of the day.

Those brave souls with a head for heights who also fancied setting their pulse racing took to the specially installed 8m-high climbing tower.

More genteel pursuits such as arts and crafts stalls and a bumper raffle and tombola prize chest were up for grabs for lucky winning ticket holders.

Those wishing to simply soak up the action and a few rays by the well-stocked refreshments tent (rather than getting soaked, as is usually par for the course on a Bank Holiday) could do so accompanied by the dulcet tones of Woking singing duo Stilwell & Lacey.
