MARK Rose has been named Woking’s head coach – and according to club chairman Andy Jones, the appointment will give a huge boost to the players’ morale.
Rose has played for University of Bath and Midlands clubs Lichfield and Stafford, as well as Woking.
An RFU level-two coach, he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in coach education and sports development.
Rose has coached for the RFU in schools, and coached the University of Bath freshers’ squad.
He works as a secondary-school physical-education teacher in charge of rugby.
Woking finished seventh in the nine-team Counties Five Surrey table in 2022-23, winning four of their 16 games.
And Jones said: “Mark has come into a critical role. He has taken over from me with immediate effect, so that I can focus on my role as chairman and ensure he has all the support and resources to prepare for the new season.
“I’m excited at the prospect of having a full-time coach with the level of skill and competency he brings to the club on the training field as well as on matchdays.
“The unquestionable experience that Mark has as a teacher and qualified RFU coach will give a huge boost to the morale of the current squad and help attract the new players we need to ensure the future of the club.”
Rose’s main aim is to ensure the Byfleet Recreation Ground-based outfit thrive.
He said: “Having played for Woking for several years, I’ve been through the ups and downs with the various teams.
“I’ve made some brilliant friends through the club. I intend to help Woking move forward on the pitch and build on the improved performances of last season.
“I’m really pleased to be handed the opportunity to give something back, with the chance to coach the lads at Woking.
“I aim to provide good-quality, enjoyable training sessions every week to support players of all abilities and help the club thrive.”
Woking’s pre-season preparations begin at Byfleet Rec on Wednesday 28 June (7pm). Players, aged 18 and above, of all abilities and experience are welcome to attend. Email [email protected] for more details.
