A TEAM from a Horsell prep school were part of the First Lego League Explore programme last week.

Halstead School for Girls attended the Ninja Warrior UK Adventure Park in Guildford for the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programme run by the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Aimed at six to nine-year-olds, it is designed to develop teamwork, design, programming and communication skills while having lots of fun with Lego.

Each year has a different theme. This year it is Superpowered, about identifying and creating a better and more sustainable energy source for the community.

For the past few weeks, children from Halstead School have been working on their models and creating posters to support their work.  The girls called their team Halstead Heroes.

Head of maths, Simona Tudoran, said: “We have thoroughly enjoyed the programme.  The girls have learnt not just coding, but teamwork, to think creatively and to be innovative.

“The programme has really encouraged them to think about the energy theme not just in the context of this project, but in a broader sense in the world around them.

"They were so excited at the prospect of coming to Ninja Warrior, thanks to them for inviting us to spend time in the park, letting off some steam before heading back to school."

General manager at Ninja Warrior Guildford, Charlie Baker, said: "It's been a fantastic morning and an absolute pleasure to see the creativity and imagination of the children taking part in this project.

“After all that hard work, we think they definitely deserved a session on our giant inflatable course and ninja runs. And, of course, they are welcome back any time.”
