A FIVE-year-old boy has died while riding his bike in Knaphill on Tuesday afternoon.

"Officers were called to Limecroft Road at 4.10pm after a collision between a five-year-old boy on a bicycle and a van, which stopped at the scene," said a Surrey Police spokesman.

Air ambulance medics helped ambulance crews give treatment at the scene before the young boy was rushed to hospital.

"The boy, who was from the local area, did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased in hospital," said the police spokesman. "His next of kin were present."

Floral tributes have been left at Limecroft Road, with messages of shock and condolence at the awful news filling social media.

Knaphill Lower School confirmed the boy was one of their Reception class pupils, and put out a message to all parents.

"As a school community, I am sure that you will wish to join me, and my staff in offering our deepest condolences and sympathy to the family," said Joanna Concannon, federation headteacher.

"With guidance from educational psychologists, we have now spoken to all pupils and staff in school. We will continue to support the children throughout this difficult time, however if you do have a specific concern about your child, please do not hesitate to contact us."

South East Coast Ambulance Service sent an ambulance and two paramedic cars to the incident, which was attended by 12 police cars.

Limecroft Road was cordoned off at both ends and closed to traffic for some time while police officers carried out an investigation.
