A TEAM from Citizens Advice Woking (CAW) are joining the London Legal Walk on Tuesday, June 13.
The 10-strong group will be walking 10 kilometres through central London to help raise funds for the Woking charity.
An annual event, the London Legal Walk brings together the legal community in support of free legal advice services.
CAW is not funded by central government, so must raise funds to continue delivering a much-needed service.
CAW volunteers must be trained to a high standard before they are able to help clients, and the charity also has a team of experienced caseworkers who take on complex housing, welfare benefit and debt cases. Without funding, CAW risks losing both volunteers and paid staff and so can assist fewer people.
‘‘We’re looking and hoping to raise several thousand pounds, maybe as much as £5,000 if possible,’’ said trustee William Annandale. “We’ve not raised quite that much in recent years but this time, because of cost-of-living issues and the council’s financial situation, I hope that will be achievable.’’
Citizens Advice Woking, based in Provincial House, Commercial Way, provides free, confidential and independent advice in person, by telephone and by email.
On average, its team of more than 60 volunteers help more than 6,000 people each year.
