SILVER and art lovers will be flocking to Ewbank’s on Thursday, June 22.

The Send-based auction house will stage its latest quarterly sale of silver and fine art as part of a five-day fine and luxury event which also includes the contents of Gertrude Jekyll’s home Munstead Wood, watches, coins, antiques, books, stamps, fine wine and automobilia.

The extravaganza kicks off on Tuesday, June 20 with Country House Sale – The Contents of Munstead Wood.

Sales of jewellery, watches and coins will be held on Wednesday, June 21.

And following the auctions of silver and fine art the next day, antiques, books, stamps, Asian art, fine wine, clocks and antique furniture will be sold on Friday, June 23, followed by automobilia, cars and motorbikes going under the hammer on Friday, June 30.

One of the most valuable works of art consigned for sale on June 22 is an oil painting attributed to Dutch artist Jan Abrahamsz Beerstraten. It features a maritime scene with a harbour and is being sold from the property of a local collector.  It has been given an estimate of £10,000 to £20,000.

A charming picture titled Squero di San Trovaso, Venice, by French artist Antoine Bouvard, shows a beautiful canal scene.

Bouvard remains best known for his renderings of Venetian canal scenes, painted in warm tones and a hazy light. The oil on canvas is signed “Bouvard” to the lower right and has been valued at £3,000 to £5,000.

Another distinctive work is an oil painting by Scottish artist Annie Rose Laing, depicting a woman reading a letter.

Measuring 49.5 x 41.5cm and signed by the artist, it carries a guide price of £3,000 to £5,000.

Many of Laing’s paintings can be seen in museums around Glasgow.

An oil on panel titled The Fisherman is by Anglo-Dutch painter Abraham Hulk and is expected to sell for £2,000 to £3,000.

Hulk initially trained as a portraitist but became well-known as a marine painter and the patriarch of a family of Anglo-Dutch artists.

Included in the silver sale is a Garrard & Co Ltd large silver presentation pedestal bowl with silver gilt handles and a rose, thistle and shamrock surmounted with royal lions.

It is inscribed A birthday tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, 4 August 1990.

Measuring 26cm in diameter, 22.5cm high and weighing 1,992g, it has been valued at £700 to £1,000.

An unusual lot is a rectangular silver matchbox, the cover inscribed “JDNH. From the gun room officers, HMS Royal Oak, 2 July 1927”.

The matchbox carries a guide price of £60 to £100.

Royal Oak drew worldwide attention in 1928 when her senior officers were controversially court-martialled.
